We have built a project-focused, fully-integrated Civil Engineering organization designed and continually improved to provide our clients with the best possible solution on every single project we execute. We work together, face-to-face, in collaborative teams to develop turnkey solutions that our competitors cannot.
Project Management
As a Project Focused Organization (PFO), we approach everything we do as a project to manage. Whether a complex client need or selecting the best health insurance plans for our employees, we apply the same project management processes to optimize the outcome. For our clients, we provide project management across all project life-cycle components: planning, design, construction, project closeout and maintenance.

Surveying
Every project we work on begins with understanding the land, its features on, below and above to create a starting point for the work that follows. Gateway’s team of experienced surveyors can provide reliable surveys of virtually any space and ensure the accuracy of the survey to comply with legal, municipal or other regulatory requirements. Surveying is often forgotten about once the construction process begins, but an accurate and certified survey is critical to successful outcomes.

Site Civil
Our Site Civil practice is applied to bring design concepts from “would like to have” to “can be done.” Beginning with the reality of a survey as the foundational baseline, we review architectural plans or landscape architectural design to, ultimately, develop plans to construct the intended project.

Geotechnical
Gateway’s geotechnical engineers and geologists provide crucial analysis of the soil and rock on which any structure, road or installation will be built. While no two construction sites are ever the same, this is particularly true in the Pittsburgh region where many geologic features are present. Our team, and its experience in this region, allow our clients to advance their projects with confidence, understanding where to build and how to build upon the specific features of a site.

Landscape Architecture
Landscape architecture is often thought of as a design function: placing trees, shrubs, and other natural features for aesthetic purpose. At Gateway, our landscape architects support our clients’ projects not only with design, but with specific solutions for erosion control, environmental restoration plans, park and recreational facility design and large-scale urban planning.

Municipal Engineering
Gateway's largest practice area in terms of project volume, municipal engineering is more than merely understanding and engineering municipal infrastructure. Gateway often serves as the appointed engineer for many of our municipal clients, providing ongoing counsel and review of new and restorative projects necessary for a community to properly function. Our direct work with many of western Pennsylvania’s municipalities also provides Gateway with a comprehensive knowledge of each of their regulations, codes, and limitations. This institutional knowledge is leveraged across much of our work, ensuring the solutions we provide to clients is compliant to the requirements of the respective communities in which it is performed.

Environmental
Environmental engineering is, perhaps, Gateway’s most complex practice area because it involves multiple scientific applications ranging from chemistry and microbiology to hydraulics and hydrology. Applied primarily to water resources in the environment and wastewater control in municipal systems, our engineers provide solutions in one of the most geographically challenging areas to do so: our hometown of Pittsburgh. Constantly improving our abilities to provide value and solve the challenges that urban growth, climate change and changing regulations present, Gateway is uniquely suited to provide environmental engineering as part of our integrated solutions to our clients.

Transportation
Visitors to Pittsburgh often remark on how challenging finding your way can be on this region's roadways and interstates. Largely dictated by the terrain and topographic features found here, planning, engineering, and constructing transportation solutions are decisions best left to those who call this place home. Playing a role in the majority of Gateway's integrated solutions, Transportation engineering plays a crucial role in our clients realizing the safe and efficient movement of traffic, commerce and people.

Structural
While much of Gateway’s work involves the ground on and under which our client’s work is constructed, we also provide engineering solutions for what rises on and above it. From aging residential structures, to rollercoasters that carry thousands of thrill-seekers into the sky, our structural engineers are able to assess, analyze and recommend solutions that ensure the safe and proper function of structures large and small.

Asset Management/GIS
Gateway’s Asset Management professionals specialize in configuring applications that integrate client specific processes to capture and maintain up-to-date information and data that supports the critical infrastructure systems of our clients. As Esri partners, we utilize the latest GIS technology to leverage the power of data to help our clients better understand their asset inventory and maintenance needs. This allows for more informed decision making that enhances operational efficiency of the assets and their related systems throughout their lifecycle. Our GIS solutions involve the capture, storage, analysis, reporting, and presentation of both spatial and non-spatial information which allows our clients to identify risk, evaluate design applicability, and track/meet regulatory compliance requirements.

Construction Administration
With our fully integrated engineering capabilities that cover every phase of a project’s lifecycle, Gateway is often called upon to administer the design, bid and build of construction projects Gateway has designed. From the preparation of actionable plans and project specifications, through the development of the bid packages, and onto the administration of the build contracts, we oversee projects from inception through completion. Regardless of project scope, Gateway provides effective management of the project's schedule, cost, quality, safety, scope, and function.

Inspection/Testing
A subset of our Construction Administration practice, we provide support to municipal, private and other public projects to ensure their compliance with regulations and code requirements, and to certify the finished construction aligns with the original plans. Gateway also provides testing solutions for soil placement and compaction certification on larger sites where large cubic volumes of soil are moved or deposited.
